Job Overview


 Citi is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join its Application Development and Engineering team, where you will design and deliver enterprise-grade solutions at the heart of the global cards and payments technology ecosystem. In this role, you will own technical delivery end to end, acting as a subject matter expert to senior stakeholders while shaping the systems that process transactions for millions of customers worldwide. You will bring 5–8 years of hands-on engineering experience to a high-performing team operating at global scale.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build enterprise application enhancements by analysing existing systems, interpreting code, and applying scripting tools to deliver targeted, high-quality solutions.
  • Develop software components against design specifications using core programming languages, ensuring applications are performant, scalable, and production-ready.
  • Identify and remediate application vulnerabilities through structured security analysis, testing, and debugging across the full development lifecycle.
  • Act as the primary technical authority for senior stakeholders and cross-functional teams, translating complex engineering challenges into clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Mentor junior engineers and analysts, sharing technical knowledge to elevate team capability and accelerate delivery.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues by drawing on accumulated engineering experience and established solution patterns to restore stability quickly.
  • Assess technology decisions against risk and compliance standards, escalating control issues transparently to protect the integrity of Citi's platforms and clients.

Required qualifications & skills

  • Degree in Engineering or Computer Science at graduate or postgraduate level.
  • 5–8 years of hands-on experience designing and delivering enterprise applications in the cards and payments domain.
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following technology stacks: Core Java (1.7+), J2EE, Spring Framework, Spring Boot, and RHEL OpenShift; or IBM z/OS, COBOL, JCL, CICS, VSAM, and DB2 in a SYSPLEX or CICSPLEX environment.
  • Practical experience building microservices architectures and integrating API gateways, RESTful or SOAP web services, and Open APIs.
  • Hands-on use of Git-based version control alongside CI/CD pipeline tooling and automated testing frameworks.
  • Solid working experience in Agile development methodologies, with the ability to deliver consistently within iterative, fast-paced team environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to performance-tune complex, high-volume enterprise transaction processing systems with a focus on reliability, scalability, and recovery.

Beneficial skills & qualifications

  • Experience modernising mainframe applications and integrating legacy systems with event-driven, distributed, or cloud-native architectures.
  • Exposure to messaging technologies such as Kafka or Solace, and databases including DB2, Oracle, and MongoDB.
  • Practical experience embedding AI and prompt engineering tools into day-to-day engineering workflows.
  • Familiarity with the cards and payments industry, including current trends in transaction processing and payment scheme evolution.
  • Prior delivery experience within large Agile teams using Scrum methodology across geographically distributed organisations.
